The Settei Project

silvermoon424:

Back in December, I organized a fundraiser of sorts to afford a massive lot of Sailor Moon settei; for those who don’t know, “settei” is a term for the artwork/sketches of characters/items/settings/etc that animators use as references in order to remain consistent. Thanks to some very generous donors (one donor in particular was extremely generous), I was able to win the lot of 540 settei sheets. A couple of weeks later, I purchased some more settei (mostly of the Stars season) using my own money which helped me round out the collection.

Anyway, after weeks of organizing, scanning, cleaning, editing, and more organizing, I’m finally ready to unveil the Settei Project! In the future there will be a gallery feature so you don’t have to download the files, but I was having trouble with the site I wanted to use and decided to just release the downloads instead of waiting any longer. Also, this project is NOT COMPLETED YET. I still need to scan and edit the artwork of the settings, characters/villains of the day, and other miscellaneous stuff.

Please feel free to use the settei any way you’d like, but I’d really appreciate a link back to me (not only as credit but so that people will know where they can get the artwork). And please, please, PLEASE do not try to take credit for this project in any way. I’ve poured so much blood, sweat, and tears into this, not to mention tons of time (literal weeks) and money (both my own and that of donors). I’d like for people to respect that.

So without further ado

Fun fact- that “Moon Cycle” was one of the only remains of what we ALMOST got for an English “adaptation” of Sailor Moon instead of the dub- they were going to use new vehicles for the Sailor Senshi (called the “Princess Warriors/Fighters” in this version) and that was going to be one of them. It’s not in this video, but here’s what almost happened in the US.

Linked video:

This is like the child of the MST3K opening and The Babysitter’s Club if it was given up for adoption and raised by Too Many Cooks and a series of bootleg “Planetary Marine Girl” toys. This is the most delightfully alienating premise I have ever seen. It’s just confusing to every possible demographic. The constant laughter of bemusement that underlies the generic pop song speaks for itself. What a thing.

I do appreciate that one of them is in a wheelchair, though. And that they are actual literal moon sailors.

every time I see this, (and I manage to forget it exists most of the time and when I’m reminded I feel that dizzying momentary relief you feel when you catch yourself before falling down the stairs – that ‘somewhere in an alternate universe I broke both my legs and also this is what aired in the US instead of the DiC dub of the Toei anime jfc’), but anyway every time I see this, I think of how angry Toei (and Naoko, I believe) was with the way DiC and Cloverway handled the dub that they wouldn’t license Sailor Moon to a North American company for over a decade and how they would have reacted to this travesty. Like, there might have even been an actual war or at least an international incident like idek.

The year is 2023. It has now been thirty years since Japan closed its borders to North America. It was a time before restraining orders against an entire continent based on perversion of cultural content was unheard of, and yet it became so normalized it seems odd. We keep circulating the illegal tapes of Captain Harlock and Space Battleship Yamato, our last remaining link those we severed ties with years ago. Maybe our children will never know what it was like before the Wrath of Moon unleashed its rage upon us, for we were the sinners.

Hello!

I’m a culture and communication student from Denmark who is just about to get her master-title. My final thesis is all about Sailor Moon! And for that I would like to ask for your help ♄!

In my master thesis I deal with what Sailor Moon has meant for us as a person; for many the series has been the first step into the anime/manga universe, some got an interest in art, others felt encouraged for their daily life.

What is the series for you?

Tell me your Sailor Moon story!

Things that interest me, among other things:

  • How did you get in contact with the series and when?
  • Are you creating fanworks (art, fics, cosplay
) to Sailor Moon or are you active in a forum or more a silent fan?
  • Who is your favorite character? Why?
  • An episode/scene that is dear to you in particular?
  • What are your thoughts about Usagi? An annoying crybaby or a role model?
  • Have you watched the ‘90s anime in Japanese or a different dub? Which dub?
  • Which “version” of the story about Sailor Moon do you like best / do you hold most dear?

Generally you can write about whatever comes to mind in regard to Sailor Moon and its impression on you! And if you want to show me a photo of your collection – just do it! I would like to hear and see everything ♄!

I would be very happy about any kind of response, no matter how long or how short! And of course about reblogs; the more stories I “collect”, the better >w< ♄

You can just post your story as reblog, or as ask or just submit it to http://mooniemasterthesis.tumblr.com/! We can also talk via chat. I can understand English, German, French and Danish, so feel free to write in these languages!*

*but keep in mind that French and English are not my native languages, ehem
