The New Yorker

Oh no, cultural values have shifted in a way that taking pot shots at marginalized groups no longer counts as humor!  Those poor cartoonists!

I love comics like this they’re so unintentionally telling about the creator. Someone sat down and decided they’d literally advertise the fact that when you don’t allow them to substitute enforcing bigotry for actual insight then they’re completely out of material

*PM* Hello. I agree that no journalist/artist should be killed over work which offends others, but can you tell why Charlie Hebdo is a racist etc magazine? Most Tumblr people aren’t French so we wouldn’t know. Isn’t satire part of French culture?

I use your ask for providing more sources and context, on racism and other accusations (sexism, homophobia and transphobia and I also found antiziganism, antisemitism and fatphobia) as well. Please beware that lot of them can be triggering.

This cover says on top “The sexual slaves of Boko Haram are angry” and on the bottom “don’t touch our welfare benefits”.

image

This cover show two of the main leaders of anti-LGBT protestations in France. The title, “manif de vieilles gouines”, means “old dyke protestations”, because the best way to fight homophobia is to use lesbophobic slurs right ?

image

This cover shows the French president with the caption “All powerful… excepts against banks (denoucing his broken promises regarding the regulation of the banking system) and “bobonne” (a huge misogynistic slur, especially used against staying-at-home mums, an allusion to a tweet of Valérie Trierweiler, his former partner, which cause some political drama.

image

Translation of this cover “The pope in Paris. French people as dumb as n***ger

image

The imam or deeply Muslim guy is saying to the other one “Brother. Don’t pay 40€ for a trick with a prostitute when for this price you can have a spouse.

image

I don’t know if it is clear but the couple are two guys. The caption says “Surrogacy : two parents and a slave”.

<

So back on Valérie Trierweiler, now former French president’s partner. This drawing says “which man for Valérie Trierweiler ? “Charlie Hebdo” suggests Bertrand Cantat (famous French singer who killed his partner, the actress Marie Trintignant, in a domestic “argument”).

image

This is DSK, which I think US and other people know because his rape of Nafissatou Diallo was all over the news. In this drawing, he is saying to the French president “I told you not to fuck a maid”.

image

This shows clearly Muslim guys saying “life is not only about bearded men” (in French, “the bearded” is often a way to speak both of islamic terrorists and deeply Muslim people).

image

This drawing starts with a pun, “decomposed family” (“recomposed family” meaning, for instance, a woman, her children from her previous marriage, and her new husband). The first “decomposed family” is “In Tchernobyl, a family is three mums and two dads”. The second one “In 93 (meaning Seine-Saint-Denis, a poor area of France with lot of Muslim and Black people) it is a mum and 36 dads (an allusion to gang bangs)” and the last one is “in Calcutta, a family is half a dad and a third of a mum”.

image

This is a drawing of French minister of Justice Christiane Taubira, published after the far-right newspaper Minute insulted her of being a “monkey” in one of their covers.

image

This is an about the wish of the actor Gérard Départieu to move in Belgium to pay less taxes. The text says “Can Belgium welcome all the cholesterol of the world ?”, which is also an allusion to the phrase “France cannot welcomes all the misery of the world” which is used by anti-immigration politics.

image

This is the French president. “Théorie du genre” is the way anti-LGBT people talk about LGBT rights. So if you meet a French personn believing in “théorie du genre”, it means they are against same-gender mariages and transgender rights and for very different gender roles for women and men. This cover was published around the supression of anti-homophobic and anti-sexism education at school, so by using “théorie du genre” to talk about the issue Charlie Hebdo clearly choosed their side. His talking about how to teach children how to read (another huuuge French education system debate), but with sexual puns with “anal” and “cock”.

image

“At least, we can say it. Hitler. SUPER NICE !”. Hitler is using a very deeply antisemit slur and saying “ça gaze ?”, a slang way to say “How are you ?”, with a pun to gas chambers. (This cover is from 1978, while all the other ones are all from the 21st century).

image

This cover is about Leonarda, a Rromani 13-years old girl who was taken by the police while she was at her school to be expelled from the French territory with her family. Leonarda was the only one of her family borned in France, and thus the French presidency proposed for her to come back in France, but not with her family. The text says “Leonarda : French First Lady” while the French presidents says “without her family”, at which she answers “shut up”.

And this is what Charlie Hebdo is.

Please keep in mind we are all in agreement that this garbage should not have led to their executions. But French people saying #jesuischarlie (I am Charlie) to try to support each other and come together as a country is pretty horrifying.

Introducing Alex Heberling

evil-inc-comic:

I’m excited to introduce you to a new member of the Evil Inc team.

As I mentioned last month, Ed Ryzowski, who has colored Evil Inc since 2008, has moved on to his own creator-owned property, Season of the S.H.A.R.K. His final strip appeared on Jan. 2, 2015.

That left me searching for a new colorist to fill a substantial void. After looking at several portfolios, I’ve found someone whose work knocks me on my keister. And I’m thrilled to kick off this first full week of the new year with her first Evil Inc strip.

If you’re not familiar with Alex Heberling’s work in webcomics, it’s high time you fixed that. Her comic, The Hues, is about a group of teenage girls who discover their powers just a little too late. The Big Bad is already here, and they have only a rudimentary grasp of their powers. Their ability to succeed hinges on the mysterious Jouchi — who may have the answers they seek about how to take their home back from the aliens. It’s one of those rare comics that’s both beautifully drawn and written in a style that will glue you to your seat. I’ll just save you the trouble and point you to her Patreon now. You’ll thank me later.

I’ve given Alex access to the Evil Inc blog, so you’ll see her post from time to time — to share behind-the-scenes updates on what she’s currently working on, alert you to convention appearances, and generally share whatever’s on her mind at the time! You’ll know it’s her because you’ll see her avatar whenever she posts. Like this…

Alex HeberlingI’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil, as my mom might say, but I came around to comics in junior high and high school — since I liked both drawing AND writing stories.

(Before that, I mostly drew cats. Lots of cats.)

I eventually went to Ohio State and earned a fine art degree in Art and Technology, doing comics in my free time and incorporating them into my assignments whenever I could. (I also learned how to make holograms and robots, so I’m ready for the Star Trek Future any time now.)

I discovered webcomics around 2001, with my entry points being 8-Bit Theater and Megatokyo. :) I started my first webcomic in 2005, during my first year of college, and I’ve worked on many different personal projects over the years, from absurd comedy, to fantasy, to my current project, The Hues, which is about magical girls versus an alien invasion.

The Hues is a story I’ve worked on in fits and spurts for many years, and I finally decided to start making the comic my primary focus two years ago! I’ll soon be crowdfunding the first print volume to coincide with my 10th anniversary in comics, which I’m very excited about.

Along with The Hues, I occasionally post to Alex’s Guide, which is my autobiographical/gag webcomic. I’ve been an avid listener of Webcomics Weekly for years, as well as a member of Webcomics.com, and I’m really excited about the opportunity to color for Evil Inc. :D

This is Brad again. Be sure to jump on Twitter and welcome Alex to Evil Inc. She’s @AlexHeberling. While you’re there, follow her. She’s a hoot. You can find her on Tumblr, too. And, of course, be sure to bookmark AlexHeberling.com to keep up with all of the many projects that Alex is going to be bringing out over the coming months.

The post Introducing Alex Heberling appeared first on Evil Inc.

My introductory post on EI!  This has been a day.

I get a couple of these every time I run a Kickstarter. This is the latest.

I genuinely feel for folks trying to figure out crowdfunding. It can be so discouraging when you don’t get any backers for something you really believe in. But I only have one answer for questions like this.

1) Labor in suffocating obscurity for years and years

2) Slowly, painfully build an audience, person by person

3) Make a thing to sell them

4) Does your audience buy the thing from you? If no, repeat 1) – 3). If yes, continue to 5).

5) You now have people you know will buy a thing from you. Launch a Kickstarter for a new thing! If you want. Or don’t? It’s cool, whatever.

Kickstarter, Indiegogo and other crowdfunding platforms aren’t where you go to find fans. They’re where you take your fans once you’ve already earned them.

Telling someone “Go put in your ten years” sounds and feels shitty, but honestly… that’s what I did.

I don’t have a trick. I just worked.

Most people only see you on step 5, completely unaware of how hard you worked at steps 1-4, and they think you’ve got a secret trick for instant success but the success was never instant. Nobody can say it isn’t fair that your kickstarter succeeded while theirs didn’t. You don’t deserve it just for showing up. You earn it, and the earning is hard.

This.
