The Cheapest Generation: Why Aren’t Millennials Buying Cars or Houses?
What if Millennials’ aversion to car-buying isn’t a temporary side effect of the recession, but part of a permanent generational shift in tastes and spending habits? It’s a question that applies not only to cars, but to several other traditional categories of big spending—most notably, housing. And its answer has large implications for the future shape of the economy—and for the speed of recovery.

It’s safe to say that a decent number of Tumblr users are a part of the Millennial generation. So, tell us: Do you own a car or house? If not, why?
IT’S BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO DISPOSABLE INCOME YOU THUNDERING IDIOTS. Fucking preference has nothing to do with it. 50% of college graduates have no job! They all have the most student loan debt ever! What are you asking this question for?!
Also: housing is a good bit more expensive now.
My parents got a 15-year mortgage on a new house in the mid-70s. The house was $32,000. Average home price in that area now? $190,000.
So, home prices went up. Food prices went up. Health care prices went WAY UP. Rent prices went up. Higher education went up so damn high that some of us forgo that all together. Energy prices went up. Car prices went up.
Prices of prices went up.
We also pay cell phone bills, internet bills, data plans, text plans, online subscriptions, cable/satellite tv, netflix, DVR subscriptions — bills that didn’t even exist 30-40 years ago. We also use computers and smartphones and microwaves and other consumer electronics that didn’t exist 20-50 years ago.
We need medications and doctors and contact lenses and tampons and maxi pads and other things that cost money just to be alive and keep us healthy.
Most of us can’t afford to:
- Get married and have a “Traditional” big wedding
- Buy a house
- Buy a new car
- PLAN to have children
- Take two, consecutive weeks of vacation.
Jobs that paid 50k in the late 1990s now pay between 30-35. Interest rates that favor consumers have gone down.
So I say, no. We are not choosing not to buy homes. We’re not choosing to take the bus in cities where there’s no good public transit. WE ARE NOT CHOOSING TO LIVE WHAT SOCIETY DEEMS AS AN UNDESIRABLE LIFESTYLE.
Don’t even get me started on the fact that these two people in the picture are young white hipsters. Young black and brown folks have been forgoing homeownership and buying new cars for decades, this shit isn’t new, pal. You’re just acting like this shit is new because it’s hitting white folks.
anyway, my point is: We are fucking broke.
read the commentary above ^^
Why yes, I do own a car!
Which I bought from my mother.
For $2700. Which was the entirety of my liquid assets at the time. I’ve never had more than $2500 in savings in my life.
Right now? That car, even with two years of depreciation since I bought it from my mother, is worth more than all the liquid assets in my possession this very moment. (I got laid off four months ago. Welfare is just oh so glamorous, guys.)
Fuck this article.

I would get these terrible stress headaches in college, and I would scream at my roommates to be quite. They were idiots. And loud. They were loud idiots. You know, I should call them. To find out what’s become of them—how they’re doing, you know? Cause, you need to keep in touch and find out what’s become of the people who were once in your life, that way you can measure your life against their life and see who WON. And I am WAY ahead!

Abercrombie & Fitch Refuses To Make Clothes For Large Women
Abercrombie and Fitch has decided that anyone over a size 10 jean isn’t sexy enough for their clothing line, and doesn’t want them shopping in their stores and sullying their clothes. They decided to only hire good looking people so that only good looking people will come into their store.
“It’s almost everything. That’s why we hire good-looking people in our stores. Because good-looking people attract other good-looking people, and we want to market to cool, good-looking people. We don’t market to anyone other than that,”
That is an actual quote from their CEO Mike Jeffries.
I know I don’t have a lot of followers but this is something that isn’t right. They’re excluding people from being able to buy their clothes and they make it seem like it isn’t okay for people to be slightly chubbier or bigger than the average “cool kid” to own their clothes. This is something that shouldn’t be allowed to happen.
I’ve seen tumblr do some amazing things, and this place would be even more amazing to me if we were somehow able to show the douchebag who runs this company that his elitist, skinny-people only attitude ISN’T okay, and that we won’t stand for it.
Another quote from the article by Jeffries:
“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”
And according to the source, Abercrombie & Fitch has no problem selling XL and XXL clothing to MEN. So this isn’t just body-shaming and dismissal of overweight people in general, but OVERWEIGHT WOMEN SPECIFICALLY, who are by Jeffries’ SUPREME judgment objectively incapable of being cool or attractive.
FUCK
THIS
GUY
I’m disgusted, but I can’t say I’m overly surprised. I’m also happy that I’ve never paid a dime for any of their shit clothing.
I’m a little perplexed that this is getting attention from all sorts of non-body-acceptancey people I know the last couple days. (Not that I mind. It’s great.)
A&F being terrible is pretty old news from my perspective. They’re pretty high up on the list of terrible clothing companies, right next to American Apparel.
I’m glad so many people are hearing about this. Hopefully people will start to realize that this is what it’s like every single day living as a fat person.
Lazy
I’ve seen so many Bioshock gifsets and so much Bioshock fan art that I feel like I’ve played the game. I always thought that sitting around and playing video games was being lazy, but Tumblr has taken it to the next level.
Tumblr – playing video games for me since 2007.
I watch other people play videos games on YouTube while I art.
If I Admit That ‘Hating Men’ Is a Thing, Will You Stop Turning It Into a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy?
If I Admit That ‘Hating Men’ Is a Thing, Will You Stop Turning It Into a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy?
I have angered people. I try not to do that. I do think there are people who hate men, but I think it is mostly caused my thousands of years of misogyny, sexism, inequality, and a powerful patriarchy turning inward on itself. If you want to know my thoughts on this issue, this article articulates them pretty well. I think that’s all I will say on the matter for now. If you are really so upset with my opinion that you feel compelled to unfollow, I hope you have a nice life and a lovely day.
I received a lot of asks about this yesterday. This is a good summary of my thoughts as well.
