Also, I thought I’d do a post on why many Romani people openly refer to themselves as “Gypsy” instead of Romani.

So, in the United States, half of the people don’t even know what the actual terms for us are. Conversations usually go like this:

“Oh are you Italian or something?”
“I’m Romani.”
“Romanian?”
“No. Romani. A diaspora from India.”
“So Indian?”
“*exasperated sigh* Gypsy.”
“Omg! Can you read my palm?!”

So, a lot of us honestly just say Gypsy and move on. That doesn’t negate the fact that it’s a slur. So don’t come to me talking about how some Romani people use it therefore it can’t be oppressive. Gadje stop.

Some Rroma will also use the word “Gypsy” among family/very close friends in an effort to reclaim the word or as kind of a joke. My familija, for instance, will sometimes affectionately refer to each other as “crazy gypsies” or “road trash.” But that doesn’t mean gadje are allowed to call us that too. We’ve turned the verbal weapons people used against us for centuries into something positive, a point of pride even. But those phrases are only proud when we use them, and use them on our own terms. Put them back in gadje hands, though, and they become weapons once again.

Ethnic groups are allowed to reclaim slurs that doesn’t mean people outside of those groups can reclaim them.

*PM* Hello. I agree that no journalist/artist should be killed over work which offends others, but can you tell why Charlie Hebdo is a racist etc magazine? Most Tumblr people aren’t French so we wouldn’t know. Isn’t satire part of French culture?

This is an about the wish of the actor GĂ©rard DĂ©partieu to move in Belgium to pay less taxes. The text says “Can Belgium welcome all the cholesterol of the world ?”, which is also an allusion to the phrase “France cannot welcomes all the misery of the world” which is used by anti-immigration politics.

This is the French president. “ThĂ©orie du genre” is the way anti-LGBT people talk about LGBT rights. So if you meet a French personn believing in “thĂ©orie du genre”, it means they are against same-gender mariages and transgender rights and for very different gender roles for women and men. This cover was published around the supression of anti-homophobic and anti-sexism education at school, so by using “thĂ©orie du genre” to talk about the issue Charlie Hebdo clearly choosed their side. His talking about how to teach children how to read (another huuuge French education system debate), but with sexual puns with “anal” and “cock”.

“At least, we can say it. Hitler. SUPER NICE !”. Hitler is using a very deeply antisemit slur and saying “ça gaze ?”, a slang way to say “How are you ?”, with a pun to gas chambers. (This cover is from 1978, while all the other ones are all from the 21st century).

This cover is about Leonarda, a Rromani 13-years old girl who was taken by the police while she was at her school to be expelled from the French territory with her family. Leonarda was the only one of her family borned in France, and thus the French presidency proposed for her to come back in France, but not with her family. The text says “Leonarda : French First Lady” while the French presidents says “without her family”, at which she answers “shut up”.

And this is what Charlie Hebdo is.

Please keep in mind we are all in agreement that this garbage should not have led to their executions. But French people saying #jesuischarlie (I am Charlie) to try to support each other and come together as a country is pretty horrifying.

To start with, it’s called ‘Thug Kitchen’. “Thug” is shorthand for black male; regardless of how strictly you might try to adhere to respectability politics (i.e. cultivating an image for yourself that lets white people know you’re not like those black people), if you’re black and male you’re still seen as a thug who’s guilty of something a la Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, etc. (Here’s an article about the racist use of the word “thug” throughout the Trayvon Martin trial.)

On no planet can these white yuppies use the word “thug” without racial implications or realistically deny that those implications are intentional. There’s a reason why they were anonymous until the release of their cookbook.

Second, it’s not just swear words, they use African American Vernacular English (AAVE, or “ebonics”) and make the conscious decision to infuse it with vulgar language, which is, by the way, racist since AAVE is not innately vulgar. That’s just their interpretation of what it means to be a “thug”. AAVE is a dialect like any other, using it does not reflect any aspect of your personhood, your intelligence, your class, your education, etc, all it means is that you grew up Black in America, or that your language is influenced by Black people you grew up with.

“All up in”, “Ain’t nobody got time for that”, etc are examples of AAVE. If you read an interview with these people you’ll notice they don’t speak in AAVE naturally (some non-black folks grow up with AAVE; that is not the case here). They’re just white people who swear a lot. They could have created their corny brand around that vulgarity alone but the addition of AAVE and the “thug” archetype are exploitative and RACIST. The language they’re using is the joke. When black people make jokes that involve AAVE, the language is just the mode of delivery. Everything about this is a mockery and it’s embarrassing, I hope the realization that these people are making money off this minstrel show inspires a serious backlash.

Tumblr user Internleland is now hospitalized because an entire blog was dedicated to threatening them, and they’d continually get death threats on their own personal blog. From what I’ve gathered this caused a nervous meltdown, they became suicidal, and had to go and get help. They voluntarily submitted themselves and are hopefully getting better.*

Internleland is a queer POC, and White Vale decided it was their job to “stop them”. From what exactly? Internleland was vocal and called out racist BS, and tried to advocate racial diversity and critical thought over the overall whiteness of Cecil. I suppose White Vale couldn’t let that happen

But here’s the deal, if you’re in Night Vale you should try and point out racist BS too. Talk about it as openly as you can.

Night Vale should be a safe place, and it’s obvious it isn’t. Everyone has to do their part to help. Someone is hospitalized because we didn’t do our job as a community to dissuade racists from getting comfortable in this fandom. We’ve failed Internleland, we’re failing others, too.

Talk about it. Mention it. Don’t be silent anymore.

Just to clarify a few things: He went to the ER based on his already existing health issues to do with his severe anxiety although he was even recieving death threats before that. He did briefly mention before a huge bulk of them happened that he was feeling suicidal and then had flushed his medication away.

A lot of what has happened to him has been a constant build up, and other queer fans of colour have also been outspoken about the constant racism in the fandom only to be ignored entirely or to be sent threats and other racist messages. Opia-apito, a disabled native american, has also been harassed off of this site from the fandom with people being extremely racist towards them. This has been something that has been continually happening and the majority of the fandom has just willfully ignored it or has told the people of colour who are rightfully outraged about the treatment they have recieved that they should “shut up” or they should be “nicer” and have even been told they are apparently Just As Bad as the White Supremecists that have been trolling the #pocecil tag on and off for the past six months, a tag that was created by a person of colour and to be a safe space for fans of colour.

Internleland however was recently the victim of a very direct attack against him. He’s been on the recieving end of vicious messages whenever he would speak out about the racism in the fandom, but a huge portion of what happened in the fandom recently was to do with an incident involving theaceofhearts36 as mentioned in Cecilos’ post above. There is a lot of stuff that went down before the main bulk of death threats but someone has managed to put all of what happened in a nutshell here. When the original #wtnv revolution was created, internleland noticed theaceofhearts36 reblogged the initial post and so brought it up that we did not feel safe sharing a space with someone who has actively disregarded his safety and endorsed a blog created by someone who wished death upon him. A lot of people became agitated about his post and that was when the death messages started (tw very graphic description of suicide). When fans of colour were appalled at the treatment internleland was recieving, people from the tag continued to dismiss and disrespect them, to the point where even one of the original creators of the tag made it clear that they dont care for the safety of fans of colour by saying “rants” about racism were did not belong there. Said “rants” were queer fans of colour legitimately concerned about their own safety and the harm being caused to internleland, tagging in what was SUPPOSEDLY meant to be a “safe space”.

Not long after this, internleland made a public post about a relapse in his mental health. After he admitted himself to the ER, he checked his tubmlr and saw 13+ death threats in his inbox. That was when he left tumblr.

He has since then wrote up this post after all that had happened. Since a lot of us have finally started being very vocal about this subject, the maintags have been flooded with people trying to talk about as if this is to do with “headcanon shaming”. We’re talking about the health, safety and well being of REAL fans of colour and so far the response from people has been insulting people for speaking up and constant derailment from white fans.

We should not stop talking about this, and it is up to all of us, especially the white fans, to help support those who are discriminated against, to make this fandom a much safer place. To stop derailing the conversation by saying “cecil could be [inhuman characteristic]/my headcanon is okay/hate breeds hate both sides are as bad as each other” as to avoid taking responsibility. We do need to take responsibility and call out those who refuse to understand the real importance of tackling racism if we want this to be a better place. We can do so much better than this, we all deserve a much better fandom than this.

TW: EXTREME RACISM AND SLURS

Alright you guys listen up. This is really REALLY important so just do me a solid here and take a minute to read this okay.

A few years ago, a good friend of mine named Whitney Mitchell became extremely sick and had to have both arms and legs amputated. She was given a 12% chance to live but she fought through it and she’s one of the bravest and most beautiful people I’ve ever met in my life.

Today, her mother sent me a message on Facebook saying that Whitney had been targeted by a website called Chimp Mania. I’d never heard of it, so I did some research, and at just a glance I was immediately disgusted. Just the RULES for the website are awful beyond words.

The forum thread for Whitney is mocking enough, calling her a “shefreak” and saying she “plans to knuckle drag again.” The comments say some pretty stomach-churning things, but I decided to leave a lot of them out. A lot of them were photoshopped pictures of Whitney from when she was in physical rehab, replacing her legs with things like fried chicken legs and a map of Niger. This is the only thread I even bothered looking at and I could barely stomach it.

There is a petition to get this website permanently deleted. I don’t know how much good it will do but it NEEDS signatures. It’s got barely any right now and I don’t want this blatant vomiting on human beings to continue.

This website has been up and running for a long time. Much like stormfront it is a hate website, but this website targets individuals, and crosses any line of what should be considered “free speech” and is obviously hate speech. Please. This is too much. This person has gone through so much already. 

This is why when people complain on this site about black even TALKING about racism, and when they complain about white girl Starbucks jokes, I seethe.

This is what WE have to deal with, people creating entire websites dedicated to calling us animals. This is why I laugh at those Starbucks jokes, and literally give negative shits about people who say “well no one should make jokes about ANYONE” because clearly y’all never seem to find the people that run sites like the one mentioned above to call them out, otherwise they wouldn’t exist.

Do you know how this feels? Do you know how this fucking feels? Being viewed as subhuman? That sites like this exist? That they target disabled women of color for no other purpose than having the audacity to be born black in this world AND suffer from terminal illness?

I really don’t know what else to say. I feel sick to my stomach. I feel this shit in my bones.

Every single one of you that can had better sign this fucking petition, or unfollow me.

I like how the creators of Night Vale detest Lovecraft for the eldritch themes and racist elements and how the fandoms most worshiped Cecil is a stereotypical Aryan guy culturally appropriating south eastern elements and being a tentacled god with cosmic powers.
