There are five main characters on Bob’s Burgers.

Three of those five characters are girls/women.

Only one of those characters is actually played by a woman.

Does this make anyone else mad or…?

It’s ver fucked up. In a lots of ways because they are all three very well written women, especially compared to the other animated shows around it. To be fair, Bob’s Burgers does have FAR more women on its writing staff than any of the Seth shows and The Simpsons, which is the worst of the lot, but its still well under half of the writing staff. I wonder if part of why they get written so well is that they are writing for male performers.

Also, while its true that cross gender casting isn’t unusual for child characters (the Silverman sisters have a recurring part as twin boys on the show, for instance), casting adult men as adult women is almost always played for gags and I can’t readily think of any instance of the reverse happening. I know the show runners have leaned on that as an excuse, but doing it twice really exposes that as just an excuse. It is clear women were never even considered for those two parts, and that’s definitely problematic.

I think this pretty much sums up my issues with Bob’s Burgers??

This show is full of all sorts of things I should like, namely a bunch of Home Movies alumni, but I just couldn’t get into it after watching the first few episodes.  And the fact that they apparently couldn’t be bothered to cast women to voice these characters… really bothers me whenever I dwell on it too long.

Just, like… c’mon Loren Bouchard.  I can probably name at least five women from your Home Movies stable off the top of my head, couldn’t you have picked up the phone and called some of them?
