PSA for Hurricane Irma Victims about their pets!!!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pets_Evacuation_and_Transportation_Standards_Act

it’s true!

You know I appreciate them going the extra mile to think of a name that would acronym down to PETS.

Congress ain’t always good at everything, but they DO TAKE the opportunity to craft those acronyms, and I appreciate that in my elected officials.

ANYWAY. Yeah. Good to know for emergencies!

Mary Jane Rathbun, Inventor of the Marijuana Brownie.

In the 1980s, Mary Jane was baking over 4,000 brownies a week for Californian AIDS patients after she realised it eased their suffering and depression. Despite multiple convictions, she remained an active marijuana advocate until the day she died.

I had to fact check this and her Wikipedia page made me like her even more:

ā€œShe was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she attended Catholic school. At the age of 13, she was involved in an altercation with a nun who tried to cane her, but Rathbun fought back.ā€

ā€œSocial activism appealed to her from a young age; she traveled from Chicago to Wisconsin to campaign for the right of miners to form unions. In the late 1940s, she worked as an activist promoting abortion rights for women in Minneapolis.ā€

ā€œRathbun often appeared in public wearing polyester pantsuits, and she was said to have a ā€˜sailor’s mouth.ā€™ā€

A brief tweetstorm about my dad’s Union job and how it benefited me through the years.

Transcript:

I have my dad’s 25-year Union ring. UAW 699 out of Saginaw, MI. So proud to have grown up in a union family. 1/

When my little sister was born, she was premature and sick as a result. My dad’s Union won health benefits helped keep her alive and safe 2/

When we were both young, we got sealants on our teeth & regular Dental checkups. We wouldn’t have been able to afford it w/out insurance 3/

When I was in elementary school I was depressed and miserable. My parents were able to afford to get me mental health care, thank you UAW 4/

At Xmas, we went to a show where all the kids got toys at the end. Some kids, it was the best toy they got that year. guess who did that? 5/

My mom only ever had to work part-time at a job she liked, and my dad came home at a reasonable hour every night. Thank you unions! 6/

In his 40s, my Dad decided he wanted to change careers. He went to school, he’s now an electrician & happy & still in the Union 7/

My life is measurably better because unions got my dad a living wage, great benefits, career mobility, and more. 8/

We lived in a nice place, went to good schools, my sister’s getting her PhD & I have a JD. And big picture, it’s because my dad is Union 9/

Don’t get me wrong, I know unions aren’t perfect. But they are sure as fuck better than the alternative. Solidarity&Brotherhood y’all 10/10

Congratulations, Haruka!

docholligay:

At last, Haruka cheered to herself! Her literary masterpiece was complete! Yes, it was a grand story of love, loss, a coming of age, and since it had some Christian imagery sprinkled in, she could even double submit the assignment to her religions of the world class that Michiru was making her take for some reason! It’s not like either of them needed the diploma, and they were here infiltrating this Academy for the Mission, right?

Yes. And the best part was, Shinji Ikari was definitely in no way any kind of self-insert protagonist. This is perfect, Haruka said to herself, as she happily clicked ā€œSubmitā€ to send this assignment off to her professors. There was no way this could ever possibly come back to haunt her!

– – – – – – –

Haruka stared at the ā€œNeon Genesis Evangelion Complete Box Setā€ that Minako had clutched in her arms, and then at Minako’s shit eating grin, and then back at the box.

Suddenly, movie night seemed like a terrible idea.

ā€œDid you go through my garbage and send this to Gainax?ā€ Haruka said.Ā

ā€œYeah I’m not sure who comes out worse in this scenario, you or them.ā€Ā

So we close on Riker demanding the trollbabies GET. THAT. AMULET.

It’s unfortunate that the only characters who were given, y’know, characterization were the two dudes. Fire Elf, Blue Elf, and Purple Elf– our lady elves– had no personality. (Neither did Emily, but I give her some leeway for being our Everygirl Audience Surrogate.) And while Green Elf delighted me and was a high point in this first episode, this show is for girls.

Purple Elf is the one that has Air powers, and I got the sense that she might be a LITTLE bit of an airhead now and then– she could easily have taken some screen time to fill the comic relief role that Green Elf currently occupies.

Apart from their powers, though, Fire, Blue, and Purple are virtually indistinguishable. Dialogue could be swapped around between the three of them and you wouldn’t know the difference. And that’s a bummer.
