Wow this is great. I’ve struggled A LOT with unraveling how black actors are photographed on film, and Ava Berkofsky lays it out so well.
I’m floored by the furniture thing, though. I shouldn’t be, because of course, but I am.
Ooh! Saw and shared this on Facebook the other day, so I’ll just copy n paste what I said:
1) This is an important and FUCKING PERSISTENT problem that happens in film/TV/photography that one should be aware of.
2) This is a great starting point for thinking about how to color/render brown skin tones in art. Brown skin, especially as it gets darker, relies much more on reflections and highlights to define form than pale skin, which (at least in my work) teds to lean on shadows/shading. Break outta that comfort zone.
