facebook reminded me that today a few years back, august 2nd 2012, i met a time traveler
dude wearing extremely stereotypical hipster gear (plaid scarf, cut-off jeans, vest over ironic tee, fedora) but looked about 35ish.
he walked up to me, this was in 2012 when i ascribed to my assigned gender and was very clearly dressed in a feminine way with my hair all done up and heavy makeup and girly clothes, and he said âexcuse me sir are you good with your history?â
he punctuates the sentence by showing me a little silver spoon with the new york skyline on it. i decide against correcting him.
having JUST graduated high school, i said âkindaâ
he nods and says a little quietly âwhen was it that the.. erm..â he struggles for a second, then recognition lights up his eyes. âah, the two towers collapsed?â
iâm jolted by the bus coming to a stop. i blink a few times and say âseptember 11th. 2001.â
he says âright. of course. thank you.â and immediately gets off the bus.
Jews living in New York state make up roughly 12% of the entire worldâs Jews. Twelve percent of all the Jews in the world in that one American state.
This isnât a âthere are so few of you we forgotâ thing. You donât forget a group that makes up nearly 1 out of every 10 people in your stateâs population. This is a âwe donât care about Jews or their opinionsâ thing.
This is antisemitism.
UPDATE: This is actually because of the laws about when the elections are supposed to be, and as soon as they noticed, they started scrambling to fix it. Elections are held (by law!) on the second Tuesday of the month, and this year it coincides with Rosh Hashanah. They have to pass new legislation to be able to reschedule it for Thursday the 13th, but thatâs what they are doing. This was not intentional.
