photos of sakurajima, the most active volcano in japan, by (click pic)Ā takehito miyatakeĀ (previously featured) and martin rietze.Ā volcanic storms can rival the intensity of massive supercell thunderstorms, but the source of the charge responsible for this phenomenon remains hotly debated.

in the kind of storm clouds that generate conventional lightning, ice particles and soft hail collide, building up positive and negative charges, respectively. they separate into layers, and the charge builds up until the electric field is high enough to trigger lightning.

but the specific mechanism by which particles of differing charges are separated in the ash cloud is still unknown. lightning has been observed between the eruption plume and the volcano right at the start of an eruption, suggesting that there are processes that occur inside the volcano to lead to charge separation. Ā

volcanic lightning could yield clues about the earthā€™s geological past, and could answer questions about the beginning of life on our planet. volcanic lightning could have been the essential spark that converted water, hydrogen, ammonia, and methane molecules present on a primeval earth into amino acids, the building blocks of life.

the waitomo limestone caves on new zealandā€™s northern island are home to an endemic species of bioluminescent fungus gnat (arachnocampa luminosa, or glow worm fly) who in their larval stage produce silk threads from which to hang and, using a blue light emitted from a modified excretory organ in their tails, lure in prey who then become ensnared in sticky droplets of mucus.Ā photos byĀ dylan toh & marianne lim, spellbound tours,Ā martin rietzeĀ andĀ z blue polaris

Hi everyone!Ā

First of all, I just wanted to thank yā€™all for all the love on theĀ last tutorial I postedĀ -Iā€™m glad people found it worthy of sharing and reading. I wanted to make this one more in-depth. I donā€™t think I would call this a ā€œtutorialā€ to achieve something specific, but a look into the thought process that goes on regarding environments, storytelling and execution. Hopefully you can relate it to your own thought processes you currently have.

Have a good one, guys! If you got questions, do ask ā€˜em.Ā :)

(Also. I know Iā€™ve been quiet in posting new art lately. A lot of the art I canā€™t show yet but there is cool stuff on the way.)Ā
